Audi’s adaptation of the MINI, this concept car was among the many vehicles presented at the Tokyo Motor Show. This tiny car was primarily built to give neck to neck competition to the BMW MINI.
Like most of the other cars from the Audi family, the A1 sports wheel hugging arches,high beltline, large central grille and chunky lines though its overall styling is not as insistent as that of the others. The taillights and rear panel of the A1 holds more of a semblance to the BMW than to an Audi.
The simple and elegant look of the car looks ready for production. The “Audi Mobile Device”, which is an Audi-branded,removable, MP3 player, phone and navigation system inclusive of screen that is touch sensitive is the only unconventional feature that A1has.You can also control many of the car’s functions with the help of this device. You can lock or unlock the doors, control the interior temperature using the climate control .The device also doubles up into a surveillance system, with cameras within the car that transmit the photograph of the intruder back to it.Simultaneously,a signal is activated thus aiding the police in finding the car.
A hybrid drive train that incorporates a 1.4 litre TSFI engine of 150 horsepower up front , and an electric motor of 41 horsepower at the rear provides power to the A1 Metroproject Quattro. The batteries made of lithium-ion that supply electric power to the car can be recharged from any mains socket from any mains socket, providing the A1 with an all-electric range of sixty mile.
If held up in traffic, the car cuts emissions with the help of an engine with a stop/start system, and a regenerative braking system that helps to top up the electric supply during braking,thus reducing the A1′s environmental affects.
