The interesting features, the mysterious shape and the ability to carry it around make the Serendip the ultimate gadget for adolescents. Curios behavior is evoked through the mixture of an intriguing negative space with a play of shadows and reflections. The concept was designed and created by the designer, Thomas Troch, who realized it with rapid prototyping technology. The prototypes are characterized both by a dynamic form and by a static form. The designer has created the prototype for research in the teenagers’ everyday life. This prototype which is called Serendip makes users be interested in what it is, what it does and the aim why it was created. The research device has a simple shape and loads of features, among them one of the interesting ones is the LED display on it’s exterior shell which can be programmed in order to display colorful lights to increase the user’s self respect.

The density of the LED – pattern represents the changing color codes stand for the used media and memory usage, calling forth creative employment of the features involved. The Serendip has the following multimedia features integrated in it: a 2 MP CMOS camera, a MEMS microphone, a 1.5 inch PM-OLED display, a vibration motor as well as a speaker. The Serendip is also able to take photos and video clips. The process of taking photos is amazing, users hold it in hands pulling the largest part backwards. The amazing Serendip really brings out the child in us. Thanks to the integrated media users are able to collect data, rendering an unusual view of their world. The behavior of users is influenced by interaction with this object influences, therefore motivating adolescents to take part in qualitative research.
